pucking copycat

"Summer Heights High is a Logie Award-winning[1] Australian television mockumentary series written by and starring Chris Lilley. It is a satirical parody of high school life epitomised by its three protagonists: effeminate and megalomaniac "Director of Performing Arts" Mr G; self-absorbed, privileged teenager Ja'mie King; and disobedient, vulgar Tongan student Jonah Takalua. It lampoons Australian high school life and many aspects of the human condition and is filmed in a documentary style, with non-actors playing supporting characters."

Sound familiar?

Stephen Merchant, you need to cut a bitch.

I'm kidding. I begrudgingly like this show, even if it's total theft from teh Smerch, from the introductory disclaimer to the style of confessionals. Mockumentaries work. I have to say though, the Office is still better because the camera work was less shaky and they had better comedic timing. SHH doesn't pause long enough to let the awful joke sink in. I can't count how many times I laughed nervously whenever David Brent stood around hapless and grinning like an idiot while everyone else stared. I loved those moments.

What SHH does have above the Office is the gimmick of Chris Lilley playing three different people - two of which make me seriously suspect his sexual orientation. He's got very fluid hips and a great australian teen girl voice. Everyone else seems to just stand around him for the sake of being there and providing an environment. The Office had a real ensemble. Gareth Keenan for the win!

SHH was on my HBO On Demand for awhile, but I forgot to check when it ended. Today when I turned it on to finish the series, it was gone! Almost as heartbreaking as when I didn't finish the Extras series before they took it away. Now I can't find it anywhere online, except youtube, which is annoying.

I really should be doing reading. And shouldn't have devoted an entire entry on this. Seriously though, watch it. It's on youtube.
